Mermaid Beach retains a relaxed, beachside atmosphere despite being so close to the hub of the city. This is partly due to the significant drop in high rises from Mermaid Beach onwards after leaving the sky high suburbs of Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach. Mermaid is home to the prestigious Hedges Avenue, the city’s millionaire row, where numerous palatial homes are located and is a sought-after area by the mega-rich.
Shops line either side of the Gold Coast Highway through Mermaid Beach. Pacific Fair, the Gold Coast’s largest shopping centre, is five minutes away and has a Kmart, Target, Myer and Coles as well as numerous specialty stores. Q-Super Centre is a 10-minute drive and has a Coles, Aldi and Woolworths supermarkets as well as other retailers.
Local buses run through Mermaid regularly. The beach in Mermaid is lovely and quieter than some of those to the immediate north. When driving along the Gold Coast Highway it is hard to miss the huge golf ball sign of Mermaid’s ‘world-class’ putting course. The iconic course is known on the Gold Coast and is popular for a round with friends. Mermaid Beach Tavern is a popular spot for a drink and is particularly lively on Friday nights.
